Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe is truly an amazing woman
In Ghana there is little funding to help battle cancer in the local hospitals. It is through the efforts of inspirational women like Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe that many hospitals receive money for the equipment and medications that they need to treat those suffering from the disease. Jamila is 38 years old and sadly lost her husband to cancer two years ago. He owned a taxi company in their hometown and worked long hours to help support their two children who are now 8 and 10 years old.
When Jamila’s husband was sick, she spent a lot of time in the hospital with him and met many other families that were in the same situation. It was then that she vowed to help these families. After her husband had died Jamila single-handedly raised a large sum of money for the hospital which went towards buying some of the supplies that were needed.
Since then Jamila has made the most of her experiences and her status and has gone on to raise a lot more money for many local health charities. She is frequently interviewed on local radio where she talks about how cancer affected her family and her children. Through the radio she has managed to get her message to hundreds of people, local businesses and other families that are in need of support. Her achievements are also written about in the local newspapers and provide hope and inspiration to others.
Over the past two years her work hasn’t slowed down either. Jamila will often go to speak to women’s groups and family support centres about how they can help both those that are suffering from cancer and their spouses. She even gives advice to cancer charities about how they can raise more money to help fight this devastating illness. Jamila Jennifer Douglas Onyejekwe is truly an amazing woman.
